How I managed to solve a murder mystery case

Who doesn’t love a good murder mystery game? The type of mystery that is hard to solve and impossible to forget. Personally, I never thought that I will enjoy playing the detective role, but it only took one game to become addicted.

If you are a true crime fan or love to play escape games and solve murder mystery cases this article is for you!

How it all started

It’s been almost 2 years since I started working from home. The pandemic and social distancing measures have kept all of us apart and events like team building or Christmas parties have become a distant memory. Luckily, we live in a world of technology, and we can take full advantage of it.

So, when I was invited to play an online escape game with my team I jumped at the opportunity.

The game

I never went to an escape room or played a murder mystery game before, so I was not that familiar with the rules and concept.

The online escape games rules are quite simple to navigate. It took us 10 minutes to read them and understand what we needed to do. We started by reading the story and learning about each character. The mission was quite simple: discover who is the killer and defuse the bomb!

We started by splitting the documents we needed to read between us. It was easy as we each had a laptop, tablet or printed documents. This way we cover more ground and found clues faster. As soon as one of us discovered a possible hint or new clue that needed to be investigated, we communicated with each other. Our previous experience from working together in our work project has helped us to be a well-oiled machine.

After that, we created a timeline of the events in the story and started to create a list with the motives and alibies for each character.

Almost 2 hours later we have found the killer and successfully defused the bomb.

What I liked the most

Experiencing new things and pushing ourselves out of our comfort zones is a great way to develop new skills and! Activities, like escape games are a great way for a team to build trust, have better communication among them and create fun memories together.

What I enjoyed the most, while playing this game, are the discussions and theories that we shared. It was great to share theories with my colleagues and dissect each clue and hint or any other small detail that could have helped us in discovering who the killer is.
